Iranian Female Athletes Take Home Taekwondo Gold, Silver

Iran female team wins World Taekwondo Junior Championships, Canada, 2016 / Team Iran

Iranian athletes have won two gold and two silver medals at the 2017 Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships in Kazakhstan’s western city of Atyrau on Wednesday.

Mobina Nejad Katesari, a female athlete competing in the 42 kg weight category, claimed the gold medal after defeating her South Korean rival Mi-Reu Kang, 22-10, in the final match. Zahra Shojaei Rad, competing in the 63-kg category, was awarded the champion title in a final fight with Da Bin Song from South Korea, who she defeated 23-2.

Mahla Momenzadeh, who competed in the 44-kg category, will return home to Iran with a silver medal around her neck, after losing gold to Wilasinee Kamjanghan from Thailand. Similarly, Hamidreza Sadri, competing in the 48-kg category, took second place after losing to Korea’s Jun-Seo Bae.

The 9th Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships kicked off in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday and will wrap up on Friday, April 21. The tournament has brought 246 male and female junior Taekwondo fighters from 22 Asian countries, including Afghanistan, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand.

Alongside the athletes, Iranian referees Hamid Assadollahi and Zahra Eftekhari from are also attending.
