Representatives from the Caspian Sea littoral states gathered in Ashagabad, Turkmenistan last Wednesday to discuss a draft of the "Protocol on Cooperation in the field of Securing Maritime Safety in the Caspian Sea," according to Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign delegations included Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia. During the two-day meeting the parties weighed in on issues related to the implementation of established requirements, norms and standards for the design, equipment and supply of sea-going vessels, as well as their operation and crew qualification.

The parties also discussed how search and rescue operations would be conducted at sea, how to best establish control in seaports, investigating accidents, and preventing negative impact from artificial offshore structures such as submarine cables, pipelines, drilling platforms and other vessels.

The Protocol provides for preventing accidents of sea vessels, protecting life and health of the crew members of ships and passengers, ensuring the safety of the vehicles and the transported goods.
