Azerbaijani athletes scooped up 10 medals at the 44th Dutch Open Taekwondo Championships 2017 held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on March 11 and 12.

The Azerbaijani national taekwondo team of junior and senior sportsmen won five medals in the closing day of the World Taekwondo Federation’s G-1 ranking event. Khanoglan Karimov, Gashim Maqomedov, Mahammad Mammadov and Rio Olympics champion Radik Isayev grabbed gold, while female athlete Daria Shkurko took a silver medal.

The first day of the championship match was remarkable, with prolific performances by the national taekwondo fighters claiming five medals, including two gold, one silver and two bronze.

Overall, the national team returned home with a total of 10 medals:  six gold, two silver and two bronze.

The 44th Dutch Open Taekwondo Championships 2017 had the best referees, maximum transparency, fair play and impartiality for the athletes, the event’s official website reported.

Taekwondo first came to Azerbaijan in 1992. Since then, national sportsmen achieved numerous awards at the regional and international events, including the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, where Radik Isayev won a gold medal. Currently over 2,000 athletes are engaged in taekwondo across Azerbaijan, with about 700 holding black-belt status.
