According to Statista, roughly 2.77 billion people around the globe are expected to use social network sites in 2019, up from 2.62 billion in 2018 and 2.46 billion in 2017.

The Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab cyber security company recently conducted a survey about social media usage in Azerbaijan, and its findings were released this week.

YouTube is the most widely-used social media platform by Azerbaijanis according to the survey conducted in October, which polled 300 active internet users aged from 18 to 65 years. Ninety-seven percent of respondents said that they search for a video or upload their own videos on YouTube regularly.

Instagram, a photo and video sharing social networking service, is used by 84 percent of those surveyed. Instagram’s parent company, Facebook – the world’s largest and most used social media platform, according to Small Business Trends – is used by 81 percent of survey respondents. Twitter is not as popular as Facebook or Instagram in Azerbaijan: Only 19 percent of the survey respondents responded favorably to it.

The popularity of mobile applications or web services for instant messaging starts with WhatsApp messenger, as 97 percent of respondents use the freeware and cross-platform messaging service. Facebook’s messaging platform Facebook Messenger comes in at number two, with 73 percent of respondents using this service for chatting. More than half of the survey respondents, or 53 percent, also use Skype to conduct instant massaging. Despite the skyrocketing fame of online messaging services across the world, 74 percent of respondents use traditional SMS messaging alongside the more high-tech options, however.

The latest statistics show that the number of social media users has been on an upward trend since 2010. According to Statista, roughly 2.77 billion people around the globe are expected to use social network sites in 2019, up from 2.62 billion in 2018 and 2.46 billion in 2017. In 2017, 71 percent of active internet users were also social network users.

The number is expected to reach 2.9 billion in 2020 and only continue upward. Facebook remains the leader in the global social media market, both in light of reach and scope. As of the third quarter of 2018, Facebook attracted 2.27 billion monthly active users globally.
