The Henri Delaunay Trophy, which is awarded to Europe’s primary men’s football tournament winner, arrived Friday in Azerbaijan as part of the EURO 2020 Trophy Tour.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev was presented with the European Championship trophy, which will be on display in Baku through May 7-9.

The Henri Delaunay Trophy is traveling across the host cities ahead of the 2020 UEFA European Championship. The tour kicked off in Italy’s capital city of Roma on April 24. After Baku, it will travel to Denmark, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain.

The 2020 UEFA European Championship, commonly referred to as EURO 2020, is the ultimate football championship of national teams in Europe. The tournament was initially scheduled to take place from June 12-July 12, 2020, in twelve cities, including Azerbaijan’s capital Baku. However, on March 17, 2020, UEFA postponed the tournament for a year amidst the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. In last year’s June, the Executive Committee of UEFA announced that the tournament would take place from June 11 to July 11, 2021.

This year, the iconic Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan will play host to three group games and one quarter-final game within the championship.

On June 12, the national football teams of Wales and Switzerland will take the pitch at the 68,700-seat Olympic Stadium. The next group stage game in Baku will feature the teams of Turkey and Wales on June 16, while on June 21, the squads of Switzerland and Turkey will meet in the last match of Group A. Azerbaijan’s capital city will welcome the quarter-final game on July 3.

Along with Azerbaijan, the tournament’s games will be played in Russia, Italy, Denmark, Netherlands, Romania, England, Scotland, Spain, Germany, and Hungary.

The trophy, which is now traveling across the continent, was named after Henri Delaunay. He was the French Football Federation secretary and the first General Secretary of the Union of European Football Associations. Delaunay has first come up with the idea of organizing a continental football competition in 1927. The first tournament took place in 1960.
