The Summer Olympics 2024 kicked off in Paris, France, after a grand opening ceremony on Friday.
The prestigious international sporting event brings together 10,500 athletes from over 200 countries, including the Caspian littoral nations, to compete for 329 sets of medals in 32 sports.
Azerbaijan’s national team is represented by 49 athletes, including 19 women. The team comprises 29 newcomers, and 6 earlier Olympic medalists. Eighteen athletes of the team are world and European champions in various disciplines, including wrestling, judo, boxing, shooting, fencing, and artistic gymnastics.
Notably, for the first time, Azerbaijan is competing in 3x3 basketball and trampoline gymnastics at the 33rd Olympics in Paris. In total, Azerbaijani athletes will be vying for medals across 17 sports disciplines.
From Kazakhstan, 80 athletes will seek medals in 25 disciplines. Uzbekistan has sent a contingent of 90 athletes to compete in 19 sports at the 2024 Summer Olympics. This year marks their debut in football, diving, archery, and women's wrestling.
Representatives of Turkmenistan include 6 athletes who will perform in four sports – judo, weightlifting, swimming, and athletics.
Iran will participate in the world’s largest sports event with a team of 40 athletes. Their strongest medal prospects are said to be in weightlifting, taekwondo, and wrestling.
Russia is again officially banned from the Olympic Games due to its ongoing war in Ukraine, unlike previous suspensions related to doping scandals. However, some Russian athletes will participate under a different designation. As many as 15 Russian athletes and 18 Belarusian athletes will compete as "Individual Neutral Athletes" (AINs).
The 2024 Summer Olympics will wrap up on August 11.
