An explosion at the Sangachal terminal, Azerbaijan’s largest onshore hub, shut down a gas pipeline on Tuesday, according to SOCAR, Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company. As a result, a fire broke out, the country’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

“There are no casualties as a result of the incident,” the ministry stressed. “The work on liquidation of the fire is being held, and there is no danger to the residential areas.”

At the moment the line is being localized and natural gas supply to the system is suspended, according to a statement of the ministry.

At the same time, BP, which currently operates assets in the Caspian Sea basin, said the terminal itself continues to work normally.

The Sangachal terminal, located 55 kilometers south of Baku, Azerbaijan’s capitol city, receives, processes, stores and exports Azerbaijani crude oil and gas to the world markets. Moreover, the terminal receives oil from Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Being the one of the world's largest oil and gas terminals, it covers an area of about 550 hectares and consists of two main parts: the Early Oil Project (EOP) and Sangachal Terminal Expansion Programme (STEP).
