Former Portugal national team manager Fernando Santos has been appointed as the head coach of the national football team of Azerbaijan.

On Thursday, the Azerbaijan Football Federations Association (AFFA) publicly announced Santos’ appointment.

A three-year contract, with an option for one year extension, was signed with the 70-year-old Portuguese.

At the official presentation ceremony on Thursday, Santos said the long-term project submitted by AFFA has convinced him to head the national football team of Azerbaijan.

“I believe that we will achieve historic results. We want to be in big tournaments. Other proposals have been on the table, but I chose the Azerbaijani national team, because I believe in this project,” Azertag quotes Santos as saying.

Santos’ last stop before coming to Azerbaijan was at the Turkish Besiktas football club.

In his career, the Portuguese specialist led the Benfica and Porto (Portugal), as well as PAOK, AEK, and Panathinaikos (Greece) football clubs.

He also managed the national teams of Greece, Poland, and Portugal, reaching the peak of his career with the last by winning the Euro 2016 and 2018-2019 Nations League.

In Azerbaijan national team, he replaced Arif Asadov, who took the interim position after Italian manager Gianni De Biasi’s departure in 2023.
