Children's Rights Strong in Azerbaijan

The protection of human rights of children was discussed at a conference entitled, “Legislation for Children: Cooperation between Azerbaijani Parliament and UNICEF.” The conference drew representatives from both the parliament and the world-wide organization, on December 15th.

Bahar Muradova, vice-speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, indicated that Azerbaijan provides strict protection of children’s rights and, as such, has joined numerous international conventions regarding the important matter. Mr. Muradova also pointed out the closer Azerbaijan-UNICEF relationship compared to previous years.

Azerbaijan gained independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union 25 years ago, ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children on July 21, 1992. A year later, in 1993, Azerbaijan joined the World Declaration, "On the life, protection and development of children" adopted on September 30, 1990. UNICEF began its activity officially in Azerbaijan in October 1993.
