The national women’s and men’s chess teams of Azerbaijan have finished the European Team Chess Championship 2021 in Slovenia in the Top 5.

The female mega brains from Azerbaijan ended the two-week-long marathon, which featured national teams from 31 European countries, in third place in the final standings. They took the bronze medal of the championship with a final round victory over the Netherlands and a tiebreak win against the Ukrainian team. Russian female grandmasters finished the tournament on top, followed by the chess players from Georgia.

The European Team Chess Championship 2021 bronze medal became the third prize of the same kind for the women’s chess team of Azerbaijan. They have previously clinched the same results at the European championships in 1992 and 2020.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s men’s chess team claimed fifth place in the 39-team final standings falling just two points behind the champions from Ukraine, who scored 14 points. On the final day of the championship, Azerbaijani mega brains have missed the Top-3 chance after a loss against the French team, who claimed silver.

The European Team Chess Championship 2021 has been played according to the Swiss System in 9 rounds. Each game lasted 90 minutes for 40 moves and additional 30 minutes for the rest of the game. Men’s teams included four players plus one reserve player in the Open Competition, and the women’s teams had the same count of players in the Women’s Competition.
