Azerbaijan and Russia held bilateral consultations on the legal status of the Caspian Sea in Baku December 27th.
The meeting was co-chaired by Khalaf Khalafov, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Igor Bratchikov, Special Representative of the Russian President on delimitation and demarcation of borders with the CIS member state.
The sides exchanged views on the draft Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. They underlined the importance of reaching an agreement prior to the meeting of foreign ministers and in preparation for the next summit of the heads of Caspian littoral states.
The negotiations related to the demarcation of the Caspian Sea have been at issue for 20 years among the five coastal states – Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. The major issues cover the access to the mineral resources, access for fishing, and access to international waters.
