The government of Azerbaijan continues to strengthen the national healthcare system's hand in the fight against Covid-19 as four new modular hospitals for treating coronavirus patients have been launched in the northern city of Sheki, as well as the districts of Ismayilli, and Gabala, and eastern Gobustan district of Azerbaijan this week.

All clinics are designed for accommodating the coronavirus patients with moderate symptoms. The overall accommodation capacity of the four hospitals is 800 beds in 400 rooms, according to President.az. Both are equipped with a centralized Oxygen Generator System.

"About three months ago, I ordered the purchase of modular hospitals. I said that 10 hospitals should be brought to our country as soon as possible. 9 of them are ready. The tenth hospital will probably be commissioned in August," President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan said at the opening of the medical complex in the city of Sheki.

"Thus, this program is fully implemented. To date, five hospitals have been opened and as a result of the operation of 10 hospitals, we will have additional 2,000-bed hospitals. I must also say that the issue of bringing 6 additional 200-bed modular hospitals to our country is being resolved. They will be brought in the near future."

President Aliyev went on to add that the launch of modular hospitals in Azerbaijan is of special importance given the spread of Covid-19 in Azerbaijan and around the world. Authorities of the country identify the construction of the modular hospital as a preventive measure taken as part of the Caspian country's fight to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

A modular hospital is an easy-to-build medical building that consists of mutually interconnected individual modules or containers. The assembly of the complex is carried out by means of a crane without using construction materials. The types of individual modules usually include operating theaters, intensive care units, urgent reception and diagnostics, central sterilization, X-ray facility, bed section, entrance premises, changing rooms, and back-office. The modular hospitals built in Azerbaijan are of single-storey category.

The overall number of Covid-19 infections in Azerbaijan is 32,157 as of August 1. The fatalities reached 454, while 26,474 recoveries have been reported. There are currently 5,229 active Covid-19 patients in the country. More than 732,000 tests have been conducted to date.

Currently, Covid-19 patients in Azerbaijan are treated at 41 hospitals, including the state of the art New Clinic, which accommodates 360 patients. In addition, 31 laboratories in the country operate for conducting Covid-19 tests. The government plans to increase the overall number of the labs to 45.
