Representatives from Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan held meetings in Baku on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.
Khalaf Khalafov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented Azerbaijan, while Zulfiya Amanzholova, Ambassador-at-Large of the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, represented Kazakhstan.
During the meetings, the sides discussed the provisions of the draft convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea and other related issues. The diplomats emphasized the need for joint efforts to efficiently conduct the next meeting of the special working group at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the Caspian coastal states.
The negotiations related to the demarcation of the Caspian Sea have been ongoing over the past 20 years among the five coastal states – Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. The major issues cover the access to the mineral resources, access for fishing, and access to international waters.
