Two volleyball teams from the Caspian region were awarded gold and silver medals from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIDV), after finishing in the top spots at the Boys U19 World Championship, held in Riffa, Bahrain from August 18-27.
The Iranian team took gold after beating Russia 3-1 in the final match, held at Isa City Sports Hall. Porya Yali, Morteza Sharifi and Amirhossein Esfandiar all rose to stardom as they led a total of 54 out of 59 attacks against the Russian team, which had a total of 46.
“It’s a very good feeling to have my flag in the first position. I am very happy because our staff tried really hard to develop our team,” Iranian team captain Esfandiar said following the game. “I know about the mentality of our coaches and they really did a great job.”
Coach Reza Farjad explained the victory as a result of 11 months of intense preparation.
“My team played better than Russia. We saw it over eight matches and there is no question about it,” Farjad said in a post-game interview.
Twenty boys teams competed in this year’s Boys U19 World Championship, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Cuba, Egypt, Czech Republic and Brazil.
The FIVB Age Group World Championships take place every other year, and consist of six age groups.
